A Hopeful Change

So I woke up this morning to find out that Crystal Renn walked a Chanel Resort runway in St Tropez, this is huge, Karl Lagerfield has always had a clear stance against women with fuller frames so it is amazing that he finally used a plus size model, and she has never looked greater.
The clothes that she wore were amazing and just like any other model there she sold them, I really hope designers start using a range of women in different sizes in their shows to show diversity and that beauty really does come in all shapes and ages, I could never become a size 6 without becoming extremely unhealthy and incredibly underweight and why would I want to throw away the one thing that makes me feel like a women.... my curves. I hope the plus size term eventually goes and just the term "model" is what I'll be called.

Top Agencies in Australia

Another Question I get asked quite frequently is what are some good agencies in Australia, I'm listing a few here and all will be from Sydney, there are many others but these are some of the well recognised ones I know.

For Fashion Modelling

Chic Managment : Represent some major supermodels in the making; Abby lee, Catherine McNeil, Alyssa Sutherland, Nicole Trunfio and tonnes more, they also have a very strong men's board
http://www.chicmanagement.com.au/

Viviens : Also a top agency represent Gemma Ward, Janeta Samp, Kristy Hinze, Rosie Tupper, Simone Kerr and many up and coming models including my friend Jenny Day.

Chadwicks : A top agency representing models such as Jessica Hart but also representing a lot of celebrities such as Tara Moss, Sophie Falkiner and Rachel Hunter naming a few. They also have a strong mens boards

http://www.chadwickmodels.com/

Priscillas: A fairly new agency in comparison to the ones above but with some heavy contenders now especially after being the main agency for Australia's next top model,  some models they have on their books are
Alice Burdeau, Alessandra Ambrosio, Lara Stone, Naomi Campbell. They also have a mens board

Bella Model Management:

my current Agency in Australia and the leading one for plus size models, representing Abby Valdes a top international plus size model, and Alana Hearne, plus lots of up and coming models.

Scene Models is another up and coming agency and has one of my favourite models on its board at the moment
Tallulah
http://www.scenemodels.com/models/620/Tallulah

So here are some top agencies there are of course are many more but I thought I would just list some.
If these agencies say no try a few more, I have been turned down before it can hurt but you might not be what they are looking for; nothing against you and try not too take it personally, just see how you go at another one. Also agencies can offer different things some might put you on their books without a contract so you can join others or just to see how you go workwise while others will offer a contract to make you exclusive to them
Let me know how you go :D

Lately

So lots have happened in the time since the last post of mine, I had to have an operation thats led me to be out of action for over a week so I have been mainly recovery but of course when you are a model your life can feel like a rollercoaster, you constantly find out good news and then of course bad, (recovery or no recovery) but that's what makes this job and industry so exciting you can never predict anything.

So as I have been castrated on the lounge I have had time at least too watch Fashion week across the globe. It hasn't been entirely exciting but there are some great pieces designers have done, one fashion trend that I think will be strong this winter is wearing wool socks with high heels which for some reason I love love love and also wearing high woolly socks. Its always hard considering Australia is following a different climate, but thats what sets Australia apart. My next post (which I'm still editing) will have what I thought was amazing at all the different fashion shows from Pucci, to Versace etc.

In terms of my life, well work starts back up for me next week, I have a few shoots and then I fly down for Melbourne fashion week so should be great and hopefully I have my energy back.

I did have some exciting things come out while I've been recovery at least, one being my latest little spread in Madison - It was a great shoot and I finally felt I got treated on scale of makeup and hair as a straight size model, problem with Plus size modelling is most of the time you do catalogues and not editorial so having the chance at proper editorial as a plus size model was exhilarating and I cannot wait to do more .

Madison shoot also featured in Madison Plus a website devoted to Plus size fashion and models :D

Loss

Last week I lost my cat, this week I lost a dear old friend (who wasn't old at all).
I feel regret, regret that I didn't see my friend in the hospital, regret that I thought he would be fine when he wasn't and regret that I am not signed up for organ donation.

Alex was my dear old friend; I knew him for over 10 years, we both did scouts together, he was in another group but we used to go on hikes and camp a lot; I thought he was the funniest guy around he would always trip and purposely fall over (stooges style) just to make you laugh, I even had a little crush on him.  I then became a 1st/2nd Merrylands Venturer where Alex was also, we became even more good friends. Going on long camps, hikes  and seeing them each week lets you get to know someone pretty well; there is actually not a bad thing I can say about Alex, and I'm speaking so very truly and anyone that knows Alex would agree, he was just such a nice guy; and in fact the last image I have of Alex in my head, is that of him laughing at one of my lame jokes at Rovers.
Life is full of hard lessons, from this tragedy comes a lesson I wish I knew already, if I was to die suddenly I'd want to be remembered how Alex was.. a person who cared more for others, a person who was never cruel to anybody, a person who would want to see you laugh more than anything, a person you would want to be.

This is for you mate, you will be young in our hearts forever; our Panda bear

so unfair.....

Eyebrows

I have a confession; I haven't had my eyebrows waxed in over a year......ewwww...some might say but I prefer au naturale looking eyebrows....They remind me of a young Brooke Shields...a recent visit to my nail salon changed all that.....for some reason I was enticed in to having my eyebrows waxed....now keep in mind I do actually keep them in shape ( I would have to anyway, Frida Kahlo only worked on her even then she was pushing the monobrow)but I thought what the hell save me in having to do them later, I even remember Oprah doing it on national TV and looking like she had a facelift afterwards....being 20 I should of known that would not of happened to me.

For the best shaped eyebrows I always think tweezers are the only way...while waxing can leave a polished look it can also take a chunk out that will ruin your eyebrows and making your entire face seem out of whack, which is exactly how I feel right now after losing half my eyebrows. Eyebrows can actually shape your entire face.....and being big and bushy ain't such a bad thing as well as thin and refined (I'm still talking about eyebrows right?), but you need to find the right shape for you. If your shape is not how you want it you will have to let them grow out a bit before you go ahead and get them done again or do it yourself......I will always from now on do them myself as I know my face better than anyone but if you can't; or can't be bothered I have researched some places that claim to do the best eyebrow shaping around town......don't pull a me and get your eyebrows waxed at a dodgy asian nail salon for $10..trust me you will not feel great afterwards.....I might just wear a paperbag for a month....

Italian Vogue

Vogue Italia now has a curvy section.....thats pretty grooovy but most of the snaps are old photos, so lets hope they update it pretty quick

Small Girl, Big City one bunny

This was one of my favourite editorials from 2009 from Harper's Bazaar America. It features Catherine Mcneil and Robert Buckley (in a bunny suit).
The reason why I liked it so much and still do is because it reminded me of how I felt when I went to the city that never sleeps New York.
You can feel a bit sad and lonely, but still find it amazing. Having the bunny in the pictures makes it funny and heartfelt because with so much going on around you you can fell utterly alone, and this is the pretense of the Modern Age, we don't know how to feel, we are laughing and crying. But hey I'd love a giant fuzzy bunny following me :p keeping me company, reminds me a little bit of Drop Dead Fred.

Alexander McQueen - A Bad Romance

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pUvFTc2mlNY
The first time I heard Bad Romance (by lady GaGa) was watching Alexander Mqueen's show; one of my favourite designers, such a shame.....

McQueen, according to an internal logic detailed in a press release, was casting an apocalyptic forecast of the future ecological meltdown of the world: Humankind is made up of creatures that evolved from the sea, and we may be heading back to an underwater future as the ice cap dissolves.

How To Be A Model

How to be a model

This is probably the most frequent question I get asked by all aspiring models and friends ( apart from "how tall are you" :p)

To be a fashion model you do need a very photogenic face
You need to usually be over 5ft7
and you need to be in proportion

There are a few different types of models,

Runway models size 6-8 (and sometimes even 4 overseas) usually do most of the runway shows, advertising and editorial work but do not always look 'beautiful' but sometimes can have quite an unusual distinctive face.

Models between size 8-12 do all sorts of jobs, catalogues, editorial and advertising but do much less runway, usually lingerie companies will use models between size 6-10 for their shows

'Plus size' Models are between 12-18 with majority a size 14/16, will once again to mainly catalogues, editorial, lingerie and advertising unfortunately plus size models rarely get to do runway shows

there are more categories but these are the main ones

I myself started originally by my sister taking me when I was 15 to Chadwicks agency in Sydney, I was going to do a test shoot with them (too see how I photographed) but my sister moved away and I didn't feel confident enough to pursue it. It wasn't until I was 16 and saw an ad in Dolly magazine about a model competition that I decided to give it another try. It still took me 3 months to pick up the courage and enter the Competition, back then I struggled to find myself attractive let alone model material. I did not win the competition :(, but I did get a lovely photo in the Sunday Telegraph (because I was the only one wearing a dress after the competition), for once in my life after seeing that photo I felt I had a chance.
I started working for Moda Models in Sydney then on after, I did free work or very little pay work to build my portfolio- You should never really have to pay for photos in my opinion ( I think there is enough beginner photographers and makeup artists to get some images of you to take to castings) I know there are a lot of dodgy agencies out there that promise the world to young girls all if they pay $1000 to even $3000 or so for photos, it's not necessary; if you really have what it takes your agency should be paying that, and besides they will be looking more at you at castings (photos can be altered very easily in photoshop these days) they're really more interested in what you look like in real life, saying that though having a strong portfolio is critical for models, but casting directors are less critical if you say you have just started.

The first thing to do if you do decide to model is to take yourself to a top agency and see what they say.
Unfortunately some agencies can be quite critical only because they deal with girls and boys wanting to model all the time and you not having the 'look' their after.
Don't be disheartened if they say no, try a few different ones, before you make your mind up. Remember also that you don't necessary have to be ultra skinny to model, you can always model at a healthy size, it just depends on what kind of model you want to be. I am a happy plus size model, because I couldn't stand starving myself so gave up on doing that, I changed agencies and got signed with Bella agency that is an exclusive agency for full figured models and in the end got triple the amount of work.

Just make sure you a ready for it, be confident in who you are, it is one very tough industry to crack and you do need thick skin

I will publish the top agencies and more information about how to build a strong portfolio later :)

ciao Bella x
